So if you already have a case, you can keep using it. Other keyboards we tested were great to type on, but weren't compatible with iPad cases at all. One other reason to like this keyboard: It really offers everything. It starts with a really nice, backlit keyboard that you can detach and is great to type on.

It attaches to the keyboard with magnets and uses the magnets to turn the keyboard on. You can position the iPad at two different angles in both portrait and landscape, too. That's a pretty big investment — especially since it won't really work with any other device.

Affiliate links are automatically generated by our partner, Skimlinks. For more information, see our ethics policy. Prices powered by Pricegrabber. This story will be updated as new products are announced and tested by our team.

If you want to discuss the current options or suggest another one, please visit our forums. But the best part is the price: This is a very popular, stand-alone keyboard case, and it's received numerous rave reviews.

It acts as a cover and lets you slot in the iPad and then adjust it to multiple angles. The iPad Air 2 model has replaceable, rechargeable batteries, and typing on it is pretty good, too.

But you can't use it with any case except Apple's smart cover. Kensington makes a bunch of vaguely differentiated keyboard cases for the iPad Air 2. The Folio Thin X3's gimmick is that it can serve as a backup battery for an iPhone in a pinch.

That's neat, and the whole package feels well made, tight, and compact. Like most folio cases, it only lets you type at one at one angle. You can attach it via magnets to use it as a cover, and when you slot in the iPad, a clever little stand pops up to prop up your tablet.

That's all nice, but it won't work with a case. This is a really handsome, folio-style keyboard case for the iPad Air 2. It has an almost canvas-like finish that's really easy to grip and protects against the usual wear and tear.

Unfortunately, it can only work at one typing angle. This keyboard case has felt on the inside to protect the iPad and a leather-like finish on the outside for added grip. Like other folio keyboards, though, you can only use it at one angle in landscape mode.

Anker makes great batteries and chargers, but this keyboard case doesn't really stand out. This folio-style case does the job, but it can leave you fumbling a bit when you just want to use the tablet without the keyboard.

We found that it's actually really hard to get the iPad in and out of the plastic corners that hold it in place. On top of that, the build quality really felt sub-par. Moshi VersaKeyboard for iPad Air 2.

The Moshi VersaKeyboard has bad ideas of what you want in a keyboard for your iPad. The keyboard sits in a slot on the back of the case, and you have to remove it and use it separately, using the case to prop up the iPad.

Not nearly as versatile as the Belkin Qode Ultimate Pro, but it provides a very good keyboard in a nice case—at half the price. Its folio-style design is thin, yet provides an impressive amount of protection, it has very good keys with a good layout, and you get a nice array of dedicated iOS-specific keys.

Removing your iPad from the Type case is also relatively easy. We also surveyed roughly Wirecutter readers for their preferences for keyboard-case features and design. You can dramatically increase your iPad productivity with real, tactile keys that let you type as quickly and with almost as few errors as you can on your computer.

But before you rush out and buy one, you should consider their drawbacks and temper your expectations, because adding a keyboard case to your iPad is all about compromises. The keyboard itself is usually compromised, as well.

Even worse, many iPad keyboards put standard keys in nonstandard locations, or overlay their functions on other keys requiring you to press fn to access the overlays, making typing frustrating, especially for touch typists.

Some models even eliminate particular keys altogether. You should get an iPad keyboard case only if you need to use a physical keyboard regularly and you want one with you most of the time. Even then, you should at least consider a stand-alone Bluetooth keyboard instead.

The biggest downside is that using a separate keyboard and an iPad stand on your lap is tough. We have some great recommendations for stand-alone keyboards and iPad stands: Each also weighs less than most iPad keyboard cases.

Unfortunately, this process eliminates many of the budget-priced models—to some extent, you get what you pay for with iPad keyboards. Based on my experience and feedback from our reader survey, the most important thing an iPad keyboard case must get right is the keyboard itself.

It has to be enjoyable to type on, or at the very least not make you dislike typing on it or get frustrated while typing. This means that, for starters, the keyboard should use a standard key layout with all the expected keys, all in the correct locations.

Similarly, the keys need to be physically good: Backlighting, though not necessary, is a nice bonus for usability. Some keyboard cases offer little to no protection, and others prevent you from using a case with the keyboard at all.

Working on vertically oriented documents is often easier with an iPad in portrait orientation. Instead, we gave bonus points to the very few models that offer such a feature, including our top pick. We also appreciated models that give you multiple angles for propping up your iPad, so you have more flexibility in terms of ergonomics, comfort, and avoiding screen glare.

Almost all use a built-in lithium-based rechargeable battery; a single charge using a standard Micro-USB cable should last weeks or months, depending on how much you use the keyboard. Of the models that met our criteria, I tested each for a minimum of two weeks of regular use, and I used each of the top contenders for much longer.

It combines a good, backlit keyboard with a standout design that lets you easily separate the keyboard from the case. No other keyboard case we tested offers all of these features. Instead, the company made a few keys caps lock, return, and modifier keys the same size as other keys instead of larger, and a few others tab, brackets, backslash, semicolon, and apostrophe narrower.

Getting used to smaller keys is easier than to having to relearn where a bunch of keys are every time you switch from your computer to your iPad. The keys are also backlit, with three levels of brightness. The case has all the necessary openings for ports and buttons, and its back has a leatherish finish that both looks nice and helps you get a good grip.

A leatherish flap, permanently attached to the keyboard section, holds the iPad case and keyboard together—a magnetic strip at the top of the flap grabs the back of the iPad case. Flip the iPad open and its bottom edge connects to either of two magnetic strips on the base, giving you a choice of screen angles: This case design also allows for two features that help the Qode Ultimate Pro stand out from the crowd.

Most keyboard cases are either-or: The second case-design benefit is related to the first: You just give the tablet a gentle tug to separate it from the base, flip it 90 degrees, position the bottom edge of the iPad on either of the magnetic strips on the base, and lift the magnetic flap until it grabs the back of the case.

The removable case and portrait orientation are useful features on a daily basis and they dramatically improve the experience of using the Qode Ultimate Pro compared with the competition. As we noted above, all iPad keyboard cases require compromises, and that holds true for the Qode Ultimate Pro.

But this particular trade-off is very common—few iPad keyboards include an Esc key. To conserve battery life, the keyboard on almost all iPad keyboard cases goes to sleep after a period of inactivity. It starts with a really nice, backlit keyboard that you can detach and is great to type on.

The Qode Ultimate Pro is more expensive than many other models, at least at its suggested price. The keyboard is permanently attached to the bottom, with two brackets securing your iPad inside the top. Open the folio, flip the bottom edge of the iPad forward, and that edge secures magnetically to the base, just above the top row of keys; the keyboard turns on automatically as soon as the iPad is in position.

The keys require a bit more force to press than those on the Qode Ultimate Pro, and they have a tiny bit less travel, but they offer better tactile feedback. These are valuable features on the Qode Ultimate Pro, and big reasons we think that model is better for people serious about typing on their iPad.

Identical to the iPad Air 2 version, but for the original iPad Air. The Rugged Book is thick and heavy. The model for the iPad Air is just under an inch thick when closed for travel and weighs about 2. Because of the weight of the rugged top case, the hinge wobbles a bit when you tap the screen, but not excessively so.

The hinge between the sections feels similarly tough, but instead of being permanently attached to both sides, the hinge has a magnetic, U-shaped groove that holds the top case in place. Alternatively, you can flip the iPad around and insert it into the hinge; this lets you use the Rugged Book as a stand with the keyboard hidden behind the iPad, or close the iPad against the keyboard to use the entire package as a thick tablet.

You get the full complement of laptop keys except Esc, with everything in the correct place. We will be testing a similar version of this keyboard for our iPad Pro keyboard cases guide.

Accessories maker Zagg has also announced an option for the 9. Its wireless Rugged Messenger keyboard case is said to be tough and highly protective ; the case supposedly meets the 6. The design also makes accessing the iOS Control Center feature difficult.

Older versions of the Brydge 9. Zagg offers three other iPad Air 2 keyboard cases that use essentially the same keyboard as the Rugged Book discussed above. The Slim Book uses a design similar to that of the Rugged Book, but the Slim Book is much thinner and lighter 18 ounces.

When using the Folio on my lap, the iPad frequently tipped backward. This stand design makes the Messenger Folio difficult to use on your lap, and the Messenger is bulkier than the Slim Book and Folio without feeling more stable.

Instead of a traditional hinge, the New Trent Airbender 3. A quick-release latch on the mount lets you remove the iPad case from the stand when you want to use the tablet on its own. You can unlock the stand and slide it out so the iPad sits farther away from the keyboard or, even better, detach the stand from the keyboard completely so you can place the iPad wherever you like—for example, at a more ergonomic height.

However, the hinged mount wobbles quite a bit in landscape orientation, the keyboard feels more cramped than the one on our top pick, the keys feel a bit flimsy overall, and the hinge and stand add noticeable bulk.

It also requires a bit more fiddling to line up with your iPad, but not to an annoying degree. It adds a sturdy brace that pops up when you insert your iPad, giving the back of the tablet some additional support.

You can even type on your lap with the iPad in portrait orientation without much wobble. The keys are good, although the keys in the number row—which have iOS special functions overlaid—are teeny-tiny. We just wish it protected the tablet better.

An exceptionally sturdy, fold-out metal stand holds the iPad at any angle from vertical to roughly 45 degrees, but having to unfold it each time you want to type is a bit of a hassle. The VersaKeyboard is relatively light, and the floppy cover folds into a rather sturdy stand.

Unfortunately, the keyboard feels quite cramped, and a raised lip around the edge of the keyboard makes it uncomfortable to press keys in the bottom row. An iPad coupled with a keyboard case is one step closer to a laptop.

Nice but what about the protection? Yes it will break. I am also looking at the Brydge. I have coworkers with both the Logitech and Brydge. I thought that at first about the Brydge when I got it. But then I realized that for the iPad to hinge from the edge the base keyboard needs to have some heft to it or it will fall over, especially if you open it up well beyond 90degs.

That is why the Logitech has the iPad so far into the base and fixes it at one angle. Now Ive got used to the Brydge I find it far superior. Have to disagree with you on the ultrathin keyboard for the mini.

It takes about a day to get used to, since the keys are more to the left than my hands expect them to be. Much faster than the on-screen keyboard. I like the bright colors because I always can find the device among other items.

I am a really fast typist I routinely out-typed all of my secretaries in the long ago days when lawyers had secretaries and I found the keyboard is adequate. The padded cover really protects the device, which is important to me.

I would welcome a comparison with the Ultrathin. Needed to be in one unit not take apart like the current recommendation 2. Needed to fold back so I could use as a tablet 3. Thin as possible 4.

The zagg even more than the logitech, but both have the problem. I usually put one hand behind the screen when touching the very top of the screen in portrait. I bought one of these for last years iPad. After a while I quit using it as a cover, but still carry it in my bag.

I use the Wirecutter recommended Joy Factory Smartsuit to protect my iPad, and then set it on top of the Logitech cover and use it. Keyboard works great, and thin and small enough to carry around separately. Article is right, the logitech is the best overall.

The Zagg I got for backlit keys and adjustable viewing angle. The big problem I have with it is it feels very tippy when i touch the screen. The logitech is just solid all around. Logitech — add backlit keys!

And the bluetooth is very aggressive about powering down to save battery. Why, oh why, do none of the external keyboard makers incorporate a large battery that will let me recharge my ipad or iphone or bluetooth headset.

I had the build-quality issues in multiple very recent March units. I know they were recent because Logitech removed the Search icon from the keyboard. Ironically, since Apple has made that key work again.

One unit had a terrible creak inside, and was starting to split at the sides on day one. The other was simply made crooked, and took a couple weeks before starting to split in the same way.

But that splitting really looks like a problem in the long-run. And the Logitech keys were nice. Belkin announced a promising keyboard cover, but apparently it never made it to market. And now Logitech has announced a whole new model to replace this.

The new model looks like a good improvement, thinner! Logitech has cut the warranty in half. Would you mind forwarding along the preorder stuff? Seriously thank you so much for the feedback! In fact, Logitech no longer mentions portrait support.

Speak of the devil… I see that the Belkin Thin Type finally came out. ZDNet has a mini-review that sounds good. Thanks again for the tip! Oddly, this product gets, at best, 3 stars everywhere else on the internet, including the Apple Store.

How can they all be wrong and this article correct? If you are looking for a sleek, stylish and compact ipad carrying case that will comfortably accommodate your ipad with use of a case or cover and all of the accessories look no further.

Check out the Devicemate ipad carrying case with all the built-in features and carrying options. Are there any reviews out yet of the new version of this cover? We heard about it not too long ago, I think in the future we will be reviewing it but nothing as of yet.

I bought the new one and I also have the old one. Adjustable angles are great but the usability is much worse. I have both versions and while I like the keys of the new quieter and feel better, the horrible magnets and new attaching mechanism is a deal breaker.

Can you guys try using your current recommended model with an iPad Air 2? I really need to know if this keyboard fits the iPad Air 2 before I made a purchase decision. It tilts back very slightly further than the ipad air 1 did but not enough to bother me.

Otherwise, it seems to work great. I have two logitech keyboards covers for my iPad Air one for work and one for home so I really wanted to make sure it was compatible before I upgraded to Air 2.

Pricing is different as well. I believe you should consider it as a separate product. What a yawning ommision! It looks decent, and as a folio case, it protects your iPad all the way around. It magnetically docks your iPad and offers multiple viewing angles.

Unfortunately, when it comes down to it, the Qode Ultimate might be a tough sell to touch typists—arguably the kind of people most interested in a full-fledged iPad keyboard. The key layout is a bit wonky several symbols and punctuation marks important for writers and coders get moved to new positions and the key spacing feels a bit more cramped than our winner.

It also weighs Professional produce the bluetooth keyboard case for Apple products, can OEM. I used the recommended model. Found it frail and the hinge apparatus in particular was defective. Much more rigid and sound.

Yes some of the keys are in no standard locations but one quickly adapts and that becomes a non-issue. Am quite glad that I switched. I was just looking for a kind of review.
